Dear Members,
Juniper Networks is very pleased to have hosted the recent BSF member meeting at our Sunnyvale, CA location. On behalf of the BSF's Board of Directors, I'd like to thank everyone that made this a very productive and enjoyable experience for all. This includes our guest and member presenters, the AMS team, the Juniper Networks' executive briefing center team, and all of our members that joined us, especially our service provider members from lands afar - BT, Telekom Austria, and Aliant.
In alignment with our strategic focus, the lion's share of our early December meeting focused mainly on the IPTV as well as content distribution and portability. Our keynote presenter, Mark Winter, EVP at Deluxe Labs, offered insights as to studio movie distribution requirements, reinforcing the need for quality, availability, and exceptional levels of security in an emerging digital distribution world. Christine Heckart, Microsoft TV's GM of Marketing, touched on some of the realities with IPTV service delivery based on Microsoft's experiences in working with the major carriers worldwide. The key current deployment challenges as cited by the MSTV sales force are new technology and integration, the home networking environment, and access bandwidth availability and costs. Jack Barrett (Juniper Networks) delivered an encore presentation from the September Vienna meeting regarding the economics and key factors in building out an IPTV service architecture. Mark Scardina from Oracle discussed the requirements and emerging mechanism for managing and distributing digitals rights information throughout the supplier-consumer delivery chain.
In terms of setting forum direction as we head into 2006, the interactive workshop session on building a subscriber-centric service infrastructure (across the provider IP network and into the home) led by Scott Shoaf (Juniper) triggered dynamic group discussions on the generation of potential working group programs. The team discussed opportunities for the BSF to educate the market on open Internet-based versus gated/closed network architectures and services, and then highlight and propose specific industry actions in delivering multiple services via multiple devices into the home. A proposed phased work program is currently being drafted for review. In addition to current IPTV efforts, this initiative could serve as exceptional platform for driving 2006 BSF activities.
As we enter into the new year, we clearly have a number of opportunity "stepping stones" with IPTV and other areas on which to contribute to the industry and reinforce our mission in serving as a valuable resource. However, the BSF will require our members' enthusiastic engagement to move this forward!
On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish all of our members, as well as all of those that have supported the BSF throughout this past year, a very happy and healthy new year. Thanks for all of your contributions and we look forward to a great 2006, working again in concert with you.
Sincerely,
Jerry Passione
BSF Secretary

The Value-Added IPTV Services Bundle
"
While excitement continues to grow around telco IPTV deployments, some in the industry have expressed concerns over the ability to recoup these huge IPTV deployment costs through new service revenues. In addition, the ability for telcos to effectively differentiate their bundles from existing cable and satellite offers lead some to believe that IPTV subscribers will have to be won on price alone, leading to further difficulties with IPTV return on investment."
IPTV Highspeed-Fernsehen
The BSF had some exciting activities occur since the last marketing update. We had a strong presence at Telecom05 as part of the iHollywood Forum track, speaking on 2 well-attended panels and generating much valuable discussion. We sponsored TelcoTV 2005 in San Diego where Derek Kuhn and Matthew Marnik chaired panels on behalf of the Forum.
The next installment of the BSF white paper series, the "IPTV Bundle" was published and is available on our website. The paper addresses future ARPU-driving consumer applications that will be part of IPTV services.
In addition, the BSF held its North American Content Roundtable which was hosted by Movielink at their LA facilities. The event generated very insightful discussions around content portability and security, rights issues, CE vs. network based PVRs, and interactivity with regard to advertising and e-commerce.
The topics raised at the Roundtable helped inform the planning discussions of the Q4 BSF meeting hosted by Juniper Networks in Sunnyvale, CA. The meeting agenda covered a variety of topics including a keynote from Deluxe Laboratories, Microsoft's interactive session on "IPTV: Fact or Fiction" and robust planning discussions for 2006 BSF activities. In addition, attendees also took time to network at a wine tasting event and dinner in a local vineyard, also hosted by Juniper Networks.
During the Marketing Committee session in Sunnyvale, we reviewed our
achievements relative to the targets laid out at the Spring meeting. I'm happy to report that we were able to meet or exceed most of our goal with the valued help of Committee participants. However, there is much more to do in 2006 and we are always looking for your contributions on the Marketing Committee.
The two major projects that the Committee is currently working on is a new BSF website (scheduled to be launched very shortly) and a 2005 Annual Report.
If you would like to participate in the Marketing Committee, please feel free to contact me at
