BSF Newsletter: June 2007
In This Issue

As the newly-elected Chair of the BSF Marketing Committee I would like to take this opportunity to introduce (and in some cases re-introduce) the members of the committee:
  • Brenda Clery, Thomson
  • Gerhard Faltner, Telekom Austria
  • Gary Lee, Liberty Marketing Communications
  • Sarah Lum, Harmonic
  • Matthew Marnik, Juniper Networks
  • Greg Owens, Alcatel-Lucent

Each of these individuals brings professional competence to the committee and is committed to raising the awareness of the Forum throughout the industry in the coming 12 months.

In recent weeks, I have been in touch with many of the Primary Representatives from the member companies within the BSF. It is clear to me that increasing the BSF's visibility is our greatest challenge in 2007. On that front, a number of initiatives are planned (or already started), including:

  • Engaging a public relations agency, Liberty Marketing Communications. (Liberty has offices in the U.K. and the U.S. and has been providing an array of PR services to companies in the telecommunications sector since 1998). Our prime contact, Gary Lee, is CEO of Liberty's U.S. operations and is based in Atlanta, GA. Gary has a long and fruitful career in the industry, with marketing experience at Nortel, Sprint and General DataComm. Gary also held COO and CEO positions at two start-up companies: Home Wireless Networks (industry's first residential gateway company for telco service providers) and FlexLight Networks (FTTB / FTTH)
  • Creating a new marketing plan (which will be available in the summer) to outline a number of marketing and communications objectives for the coming year
  • Launching an external awareness campaign in late summer/early fall.

The Marketing Committee holds monthly calls to discuss strategic issues, but most of our activities are handled "off line". New members are always welcome, so please contact me if you are interested.

Of course, not wanting to get actively involved in the committee does not preclude you from having opinions and great ideas. I welcome your thoughts on the BSF and your feelings on our profile. I am currently based in Antwerp, Belgium and can be reached at greg.owens@alcatel-lucent.be

I'm looking forward to the BSF's best year yet. All the best,

    Greg Owens
    Chair, BSF Marketing Committee
    Market Development Manager, Alcatel-Lucent

The Home Network as IPTV Value-Add
    Monday, June 18, 2007
    10:00 - 11:30 am
    Chicago, USA

    Moderator: Matthew Marnik, Juniper Networks
    Panelists:

  • Brett Azuma (President, Ovum North America)
  • Albert Estrada (Chief Executive Officer, Optical Entertainment Network)
  • Derek Kuhn (Senior Director Marketing and Business Development, Alcatel-Lucent)

Telcos deploying IPTV services to consumers do so to grow and protect bundled revenue share and have greater control over the consumer's information and entertainment environment so new and innovative services can be rolled out over time. The greatest attention has been given to designing and deploying IPTV networks from the head end to the subscriber edge. Yet, the home network environment is where content will ultimately be distributed and will determine the user's quality of experience and evaluation of the IPTV service. Telcos are beginning to look at the implications of the home network and the CE devices that exist on it for their plans to serve the digital home of the future.
This session will examine IPTV provider rationales for playing in the home network, the dynamic ecosystem in the home network, and user expectations for the role of the home network in information and entertainment delivery.
