At our San Francisco meeting in December 2006, we defined Home Networking as the area of focus for our activities in the first quarter of this year. With that in mind, we planned various projects that addressed the issues and challenges related to home networking.
In early March the BSF collaborated with the MPEG Industry Forum in an interactive panel at the IPTV World Forum in London; Andrew Keevil moderated the discussions that covered various aspects of the new trends in home networks. The panel presentations are currently available to BSF members on the BSF website.
In addition, I was honored to be invited to participate in a private televised session addressing Media Convergence, organized by the TeleManagement Forum. The valuable discussions held during this session constitute a basis for the TeleManagement World Forum, to be held later this year in Nice.
For the remainder of the quarter, we will continue to focus our activities on the Home Networking arena, by finalizing the Home Networks survey introduced by Ovum at our December 2006 meeting, developing a white paper on Home Networking issues identified by our members and arising from the panel discussions at the IPTV World Forum, and participating in industry events that relate to the subject.
In the spirit of strengthening our relationship with other important industry fora, the BSF has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the TeleManagement Forum whereby members of each organization will have influence over related work in the area of telecom-web convergence issues. The groups will share and review each other's documents and participate in joint events.
The BSF Q2 meeting, focused on Advanced Applications, will be held in North America in the Spring. For the third quarter of the year, our efforts will relate to Monetizing IP Traffic, with the Q3 meeting planned for the early Fall in Western Europe. Detailed information on upcoming meetings will be posted on the BSF website in the upcoming weeks.
Finally, the notes from the 4th Annual Content Roundtable, held in Los Angeles and hosted by Warner Music, will be available to our members later this month.
During the first two months of 2007, Marketing Committee members have been busy representing the Forum at industry events.
David Price of Harmonic Inc. moderated a panel session at IPTV World Forum Latin America, entitled "Putting Subscribers at the Centre of Their Own Entertainment Universe". Mary Francia of Philips and 2006 Marketing Committee Chair was a panelist.
Matthew Marnik of Juniper Networks represented the BSF at the Global IPTV Deployment Strategies Forum 2007, where he spoke on the topic of IPTV Services and IPTV Advertising as significant revenue generators for telcos. This topic has also been submitted for consideration to the Broadband World Forum Europe 2007.
Andrew Keevil of SupportSoft moderated a BSF panel for the IPTV World Forum London on March 7th. The session, entitled "From Vision To Reality: Making The "Real" Digital Home Work" is focused on Home Networking, theme for the BSF activities during Q1 of 2007. Panelists include speakers from Juniper Networks, Telekom Austria, Harmonic Inc., and dicas.
In addition, the BSF will carry forward the Q1 Home Networking theme at NXTcomm, held in June in Chicago, with an interactive panel discussion on June 18th. If you are interested in participating on the panel, please contact Matthew Marnik at Matthew Marnik as soon as possible.
Finally, the BSF has secured sponsorship of 10 worldwide industry events during this first quarter.
Besides the speaking engagements, the Marketing Committee has actively promoted the newest BSF documents and following an invitation from the IEC, we submitted the "IPTV Explained," "Business Models and Drivers for Next Generation IMS Services" and "Video Quality in IPTV Platforms" white papers for various IEC publications.
In 2006, Ovum conducted a 1000+ end-user study to determine usage and expectations around home networks, with a particular focus on what service providers could offer relative to the home network. The fascinating, and often surprising results of this survey were presented at the Q4 BSF meeting in San Francisco.
As a complement to the end-user study, Ovum is conducting a service provider survey on plans for services relating to the home network. This study will be complete and the results available to BSF members in March.
As always, we welcome all interested members to participate in the Marketing Committee, conference calls are held every two weeks. For more information, please visit us online.

Digital Media Delivery 2007 will be a Converged Event for a Converged Industry. Its launch is based on the proposition that the sector is saturated with silo events addressing individual aspects of digital media; IPTV, DTH, DSL, MPEG 4, mobile TV, etc, etc. What is needed is a single event where a well-defined community of vendors in the digital media distribution chain - from ingestation through transmission to home gateway - can meet an equally well-defined community of buyers.
